Heat Exhaustion, Dehydration & Sunburn: Summer Health Tips for Barcelona Visitors

Barcelona is one of Europe’s gems, with its Mediterranean charm, stunning architecture, and beautiful beaches. With so much allure, it’s no surprise the city attracts millions of visitors every summer. However, tourists should also be conscious of the hidden health risks that come with the heat. Heat exhaustion, dehydration, and sunburn are the most common summer ailments that can easily spoil a vacation if one is not aware and prepared.

Here’s how to stay safe, healthy, and fully enjoy your Barcelona adventure!

1. Understanding the Summer Heat in Barcelona

Barcelona’s summer temperatures often rise above 30°C (86°F), with July and August being the hottest months. The high humidity levels can make the heat feel even more intense, especially during midday hours. The Mediterranean climate can be new to many people, so it is important to stay aware and respect the power of the sun throughout your daily activities.

2. How to Prevent Heat Exhaustion

Heat exhaustion occurs when your body overheats and can’t cool down efficiently, often caused by prolonged exposure to high temperatures and physical activity. Symptoms include:

    • Dizziness or fainting
    • Heavy sweating
    • Nausea
    • Muscle cramps
    • Headache

    → Tips to Avoid It:

      • Avoid outdoor activities during peak sun hours (12–4 PM).
      • Take frequent breaks in the shade or air-conditioned places.
      • Wear light, loose-fitting clothing and a wide-brimmed hat.
      • Use a fan or cooling towel if needed.

If you or someone else shows signs of heat exhaustion, move to a cool area immediately, hydrate, and seek medical help if the symptoms persist.

    3. Dehydration: The Invisible Threat

With so much to see and do, it’s easy to forget to drink enough water. Dehydration can sneak up quickly, especially when you’re walking long distances or consuming alcohol.

    → Watch for these signs:

    • Dry mouth and lips
    • Fatigue or confusion
    • Dark-colored urine
    • Headache

    Stay Hydrated By:

      • Carrying a reusable water bottle or purchasing water at any nearby store
        • Fun fact: Barcelona has many public fountains, just look for “font de canaletes!”
      • Drinking water regularly, even if you’re not thirsty.
      • Limiting alcohol and caffeine during the hottest parts of the day (12–4PM).
      • Eating fruits and vegetables with high water content
          • Such as watermelon, cucumbers, and oranges.

    4. Avoiding Painful Sunburns

Barcelona’s sunny days may feel like paradise, but UV rays can cause serious skin damage in less than 30 minutes of exposure.

    → Sunburn Prevention:

    • Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) every 2 hours and after swimming.
    • Wear sunglasses with UV protection.
    • Seek shade whenever possible.
    • Cover your shoulders and any exposed skin as much as possible, especially during outdoor activities or beach days.

    5. What to Do if You Get Sick in Barcelona

If you experience severe symptoms, such as heatstroke, extreme dehydration, or blistering sunburn, seek medical care immediately. Barcelona has excellent healthcare facilities, and EU travelers can use the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) for access to public services.

For travelers outside of the EU, travel insurance is highly recommended. If there are concerns about any other symptoms or illnesses, MedVisit has licensed, English-speaking doctors readily available to visit you in your apartment or hotel. We work with local private hospitals to ensure you get quality medical treatment during your time in Barcelona.

You can also visit local pharmacies (called farmàcias) for advice and over-the-counter treatments. Most pharmacists in central areas speak some English.

By staying hydrated, protecting your skin, and pacing your activities wisely, you can make the most of your Mediterranean getaway—healthy and sunburn-free.

Stay cool, stay safe, and enjoy everything Barcelona has to offer!
